Atari’s Backyard sports series combines unique characters with kid versions of sports superstars and a number of fun, challenging gameplay modes to create an original, entertaining game that does more than just aim for recreating the sport. BACKYARD FOOTBALL 2006 for the PC continues this tradition. Players can select from among twenty Backyard kids, fourteen NFL superstars, or create their own characters. Some of the NFL players are locked at first, requiring players to win a certain number of games or accomplish certain tasks before recruiting them. Other unlockable extras include jerseys from all 32 NFL teams, stadiums, and special moves. The special moves are perhaps the biggest difference between BACKYARD FOOTBALL 2006 and other football games. Players have access to abilities like turbo boost, and when used at the right time, these abilities can greatly change the game. New to the 2006 version is the Power Move System, which lets players set up a power plays to take control of the game. BACKYARD FOOTBALL 2006 doesn’t focus on realistic physics or exact recreations of the game’s many plays and rules; instead, it focuses on giving players the chance to play some crazy, exciting games of football.
