The AREA 51 series first began as a light gun-based arcade shooter game, and now Midway has brought the series to the Pc Games as a first person shooter along the lines of HALO and DOOM.

The game revolves around HAZMAT operative Ethan Cole, who has been summoned to Area 51 to discover the source of a deadly virile outbreak. He soon discovers that the staff of the secret alien research base has mutated into deadly, dangerous enemies. Even worse, Ethan himself quickly becomes infected.

While the game is a fairly straight-forward first person shooter involving blasting everything that moves while searching for keys, secret codes, and other clues, it does have some interesting twists. Once Ethan becomes infected with the virus, he gains the ability to mutate into a stronger form complete with two ranged attacks.

The visuals also change, taking on an almost infra-red interface. Once the single-player missions are finished, AREA 51 offers gamers a multiplayer mode that accommodates up to 16 players. Several different options are available, including deathmatch, capture the flag, and infection, in which players can play as mutants and attempt to infect the human players.

There are also unlockable secrets that can be found by scanning objects, , computer workstations, and corpses. While AREA 51 has been absent from the arcade for awhile, first person shooter fans will immediately latch on to its Pc Games version. Fans of THE X-FILES should also check it out to hear star David Duchovny voice Ethan Cole.

Legend says the elementals infused their power into stones on the continent of Chantra, creating a mysterious and enchanted environment rumored to be the home of five gemstones called the Archons. As members of the ArchLord online community, players are given the task of locating these Archons by conquering the strongholds of each playable race. Orcs, Humans, and Moon Elves all search for the stones in areas designed around five elements -- fire, spirit, earth, water, and air -- and each race begins its adventure in a different place. For example, an Orc may start his journey in a forest wilderness, while a human might set out in the middle of a bustling city. After selecting a race, gamers may also choose from eight nation-specific classes.

To fulfill this objective, players must have at least a level 60 character, with a guild of level 60 avatars backing them up. Of course, gamers of an opposing guild will be waiting to defend the strongholds, or take them for their own, so player associations could potentially engage in endless combat during the quest for the stones. To reach a position of power, skills must be increased and levels must be achieved. The land of Chantra is full of opportunities, in the form of side quests and roaming monsters ready to attack an unsuspecting band of adventurers. The class chosen at the beginning of the game determines fighting style, but certain potions can give players an edge on the competition. Drinking special concoctions can temporarily change a player into a monster who can infiltrate an area filled with creatures, or attack six times in a row.

The Anno series is a long-running and well-respected city building franchise that has managed to fly just under the radar of most mainstream gamers. Ubisoft is hoping to change that, starting with its announcement of the next in the series at its German Games Convention press conference. We got our first look at Anno 1404 later in the day and learned the mystery of how they come up with the names for these games.

If you know your history, you'll know by the title that Anno 1404 takes place in the late middle ages. This medieval time period was one where building a huge metropolis was already pretty complex and that shows through in a big way in this game. When Christopher Schmitz, executive producer, told us this game will have the biggest cities yet in an Anno game, he wasn't joking. To get there, however, you'll have to start small.

The game begins with a simple ship. Upon setting sail it's up to you to select a suitable place to build a village. The islands in this game are no longer boxy, fake looking land structures. In fact, most everything in Anno 1404 looks sharp. The waves look and behave realistically as the ship moves through them and we're told that if you were to throw your cargo overboard, it would react realistically as well. It's an entirely new engine powering the game, built from the ground up to do exactly what the developers want it to. One of those things, incidentally, is for the engine to be scalable. That means even a low-end PC will be able to run Anno 1404, though if you have a high-end setup you'll get the best looking game.

The line between games and movies is sort of blurred in the structure of the game. While the play style holds tight to the point-and-click adventure template, the game is constructed solely with still photos that give your jaunt the vibe of an indie film. So even though you play a stereotypical sleuth looking to solve the mystery of the ancient Obsidian Disk on the island of Capri, the atmosphere is quite different from the sorts of adventures you might be accustomed to. Thousands of photos depicting everything from seaside vistas to cobblestone roads, to the many quaint shops lining the narrow streets of the titular town of Anacapri, give you the impression that you've embarked on a real trip to the exotic Mediterranean locale. The gameworld is absolutely massive, so it frequently feels as if you're really exploring all of the crooks and crannies of the island.

Someone needs to tell S&G Software that it's no longer 1993. Creating games with photographs and video clips in place of digitally created images is about as culturally relevant today as a new Coolio CD, so it's hard to see what the developer was thinking when it made Anacapri: The Dream. This throwback to the era of The 7th Guest may include thousands of photographs of one of the most gorgeous vacation spots on the planet, but it plays more like something you found at a yard sale than a game you pulled down from the new releases shelf.

However, there are prices to pay for this type of presentation and the sheer size of everything. Many of the most potentially picturesque outdoor shots are blurry or strewn with artifacts, presumably to keep picture size reasonable. Oddly, the most sharply detailed pics are the dull ones that show a shopkeeper behind his counter or an old man sitting on a bench. Regardless of quality, there is an air of absurdity to the whole affair because of the use of multiple shots of people during conversations to give the illusion of movement. Done more subtly, this might have been a good idea, and might have nicely added the illusion of movement to what is otherwise a breathless game. But all of the changed poses and expressions given to Anacapri residents are wildly exaggerated, so encounters with them come off like some sort of bizarre mime show. Finally, there are some technological issues in the install process due to the high number of photographs. There are so many photos included as single, high-resolution files that the installation takes almost as long as a flight to Capri itself. You might want to brew a pot of coffee for this one, as it takes a good two hours for all seven gigs of picture files to be transferred from the DVD to your hard drive.
